French Nationalists Win Big in EU Elections
Le Pen's Party Gains Seats in Parliament
Macron Faces Political Upheaval
The populist National Rally led by Marine Le Pen has emerged as the clear victor in France's European Parliament elections, according to preliminary results. The far-right party has significantly increased its representation in the parliament, dealing a blow to President Emmanuel Macron's centrist government.
With nearly all votes counted, the National Rally is projected to win 25 seats in the 705-member parliament. This represents a sharp increase from the party's eight seats in the previous parliament.
Macron's La République En Marche party has suffered a significant setback, with projections showing it will win only 23 seats. The party was hoping to make significant gains in the elections but has been outperformed by the National Rally.
The results are seen as a major political upset and a sign of the growing strength of populist movements across Europe. Le Pen has campaigned on a platform of anti-immigration, Euroscepticism, and economic protectionism.
